Brief summary - Scientific career: Dr. Alcántara is a researcher who studied two B.Sc., the first in Teaching (University of Cordoba) and the second in Sport Sciences (Catholic University of Valencia San Vicente Martir). He was awarded with a Formación de Profesorado Universitario (FPU) contract (a competitive personal grant) and finished his international PhD in Biomedicine in Dec-2020 (Cum Laude; University of Granada). During his PhD, he was involved in one of the most comprehensive studies in human metabolism (see, PMID: 36097264). Later, among other grants, he was awarded with a Juan de la Cierva - Formación (JdC-F), which is a highly competitive personal postdoc grant in Spain. Dr. Alcántara, during his PhD studies, revealed that most part of inter-day variability in resting energy expenditure (REE) is explained by the individuals rather than the metabolic cart used for it assessment (PMID: 29739678). To overcome this, he used a post-calorimetric correction procedure –a novel technique in the indirect calorimetry field. Surprisingly, this technique did not significantly improve the inter-day reproducibility of REE and/or nutrient oxidation rates (see, PMIDs: 35180452 and 36006468). However, he was able to propose a new gold standard metabolic cart for the assessment of human REE and nutrient oxidation rates, which was lacking as the former gold standard device is no longer available (see, PMIDs: 35180452 and 36006468).
