个人简介
I am a cognitive scientist with theoretical interests in human and artificial intelligence and their applications in understanding expertise in medicine and other complex domains. I also have a commitment to translating theoretical results into practical technologies that can help to improve individual and organisational performance, particularly in quality and safety of patient care. Despite standard criticisms of “irrational” features of clinical decision-making, for example, and the associated challenges of medical error and other performance issues, I view clinical thinking as an impressive example of human versatility and adaptability in difficult settings. Medicine is a uniquely rich domain in which to study the strengths as well as the weaknesses of human performance, and it is a source of insights that can inspire the development of novel technologies.
My group’s interdisciplinary approach has led to significant contributions in psychology and decision theory, computer science and artificial intelligence, and novel techniques in medical informatics and knowledge engineering (e.g. Safe and Sound: Artificial Intelligence in Hazardous Applications, MIT Press, 2000). My applied research has in turn led to a general methodology for the design and implementation of point-of-care services such as decision support services, and a diverse range of applications that are based on this methodology are being used in several countries to support routine care, increasingly in the NHS.
