His main interests are in thyroid physiology, thyroid pathophysiology, and thyroid autoimmunity. His group has made a major contribution to the description and immunopathology of postpartum thyroid disease and also is examining various aspects of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, subclinical thyroid disease, antithyroid drug metabolism, and management of Graves’ disease. Another major focus has been on the effect of lithium on thyroid gland function. He has led the group examining the strategy of screening for thyroid function in early pregnancy and has performed a number of studies on iodine metabolism. Dr. Lazarus has been International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) Regional Coordinator for Western and Central Europe since 2012. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals including Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Endocrinology, and Thyroid.
