My research interests are the molecular mechanisms of bacteria that are pathogenic for animals, including Pasteurellaceae, where I detected RTX toxins as predominant virulence attributes of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Mycoplasma species unravelling the uptake mechanism and metabolism of glycerol as a major virulence attribute of virulence of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides; and virulence Aeromonas salmonicida, the etiological agent of furunculosis of salmon, trout and char, with the discovery of Type III secretion as the central virulence attribute.
In the function as head of the National Centre of Anthrax and other highly pathogenic bacteria NANT, a supplementary task of the Insitute, research includes the molecular epidemiology of Bacillus anthracis and Francisella tularensis. I was president of the International Organisation of Mycoplasmology, IOM, 2010 - 2012. I am currently member of the international committee on systematics of prokaryotes, subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes and member of the Swiss Commission of Biological Safety.
