My research involves the analysis of high-resolution elemental data collected from marine sediments using an Itrax micro-xray fluorescence core scanner. This device gives me the ability to detect the abundances of elements between Al and U at ultra-high vertical resolution (0.5-mm intervals). This level of resolution shows short-term (annual to decadal), rapid environmental changes that are easily missed when using traditional geochemistry with ICP-OES/MS or wavelength-dispersive XRF.
