Prof. Paik’s research interests include nonlinear structural mechanics, analysis, and design; advanced safety studies; limit-state-based design; structural reliability; quantitative risk assessment and management; health condition assessment and management; fire, explosion, collision, grounding, dropped object and impact engineering; corrosion assessment and management; structural longevity; inspection and maintenance and decommissioning; digital twins for lifetime healthcare of engineering structures. Prof. Paik has authored or co-authored more than 600 technical papers, including more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is the author or editor of eight books: Ship-Shaped Offshore Installations: Design, Construction, Operation, Healthcare and Decommissioning, Second Edition, Cambridge University Press, 2021; Advanced Structural Safety Studies with Extreme Conditions and Accidents, Springer, 2020; Engineering Dynamics and Vibrations: Recent Developments (with J. Jia), CRC Press, 2019; Ultimate Limit State Analysis and Design, Second Edition, John Wiley & Sons, 2018; Ship Structural Analysis and Design (with O. F. Hughes), SNAME, 2013; Condition Assessment of Aged Structures (with R. E. Melchers), CRC Press, 2009; Ship-Shaped Offshore Installations: Design, Building, and Operation (with A. K. Thayamballi), Cambridge University Press, 2007 and Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel-Plated Structures (with A. K. Thayamballi), John Wiley & Sons, 2003. Prof. Paik has also obtained more than 50 patents based on his research across a wide range of topics on the safety of engineering structures.
