Prof Jason Mackenzie leads a research team that utilises multidisciplinary approaches to decipher how viruses establish their replicative niche in cells enabling him to construct research programs centred on intracellular virus replication. His background and expertise have resulted in a highly successful program that has culminated in the delivery of 83 research papers cited 8,016x (3,212 citations since 2016) with and average of 96.6 citations/paper; (Google Scholar) with 3 papers recommended in F1000 Prime.

He has a proven expertise in norovirus research: His collaborative discovery of the 1st tissue culture system for norovirus is highly valuable new knowledge that has had significant influence on the field of understanding the determinants of norovirus infection and replication. This significant advance enabled the field to further understand the pathogenesis of norovirus infection, including (i) identifying the intracellular site of norovirus replication and associated ultrastructural changes in cellular membranes ; (ii) roles of the viral proteins during replication; (iii) activation of cellular stress pathways including autophagy and stress granules, modulation of the host translation machinery; (iv) norovirus evasion from both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system; and (v) the development and assessment of norovirus-specific antivirals. This knowledge would not have been gained if the virus could not be grown in the lab!
