José Vidal Gancedo is a researcher in the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Networking Research Center on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN). He is also the scientist in charge of the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Laboratory of the ICMAB and President of the Spanish Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Group (GERPE). He received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid and he concluded his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Barcelona under the supervision of Prof. Jaume Veciana working on the synthesis of high-spin polymers in the CID-CSIC in Barcelona. In 1991 he joined the new Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) where he was responsible for the creation and designing of the new EPR Laboratory. He was promoted to Tenured Scientist in 2002 and Research Scientist in 2023. He made some research stays in different European universities and research centers (Universities of Strasbourg, Innsbruck and York, and in the Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses of CNRS, Grenoble).
His research interest focuses on molecular functional materials and molecular nanoscience related with organic radicals and EPR. In the last years he has been focused on the synthesis, characterization and study of mono, biradicals and radical dendrimers for medical diagnosis. In particular, the behaviour of persistent organic radicals anchored on surfaces, especially metallic nanoparticles, the synthesis of mono or diradicals for use as polarizing agents in dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and radical dendrimers as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All these lines of research are eminently interdisciplinary, since they go from the design and organic synthesis of the functional molecules to the material preparation and application. Part of the research is performed in collaboration with different groups inside the frameworks of European and International projects.
