Dr. Magodoro is an early career investigator in cardiovascular diseases and global health. His main research focus is to improve how we identify and prevent heart disease in adolescents and young adults. He especially focuses on two vulnerable populations: (1) those who were born and are growing up with HIV infection and (2) those who were born to pregnancies complicated by preterm birth and/or high blood pressure. His research combines multimodality imaging, including echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging, with laboratory-based studies to better understand the mechanisms that predispose to heart diseases, like heart failure.
Itai conducts his HIV-related primary research among adolescents in Cape Town, South Africa, as a Fogarty Fellow in the Department of Cardiology, University of Cape Town. He is also a clinical research fellow in the Leeson Preventive Cardiology Research Group at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford, England, where he focuses on premature birth as a later-life risk marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD). As a global health research enthusiast, Itai has and continues to collaborate in other studies in Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa similarly geared toward preventing premature heart disease through the improved understanding of risk factors and disease mechanisms.
