Research interests
Professor Irwig conducts epidemiological studies that build the body of evidence to facilitate clinical and public health decision-making. As principal investigator of STEP, he oversees a multidisciplinary research program involving epidemiologists, psychologists, biostatisticians and health economists, who are evaluating medical tests used for screening, diagnosis and monitoring. Research conducted via STEP aims to: (a) understand which screening programs are worthwhile and examine how those found to be worthwhile would best be implemented; and (b) explore the performance characteristics of different screening and diagnostic tests. The research includes applied studies and the development of concepts and methods for test evaluation.
Professor Irwig is involved in and collaborates on a wide variety of studies, e.g. exploring the effects of informing women about overdiagnosis in mammography; and collaborative studies investigating the appropriate frequency of monitoring required after the diagnosis of an abnormality, e.g. in melanoma. He has made important contributions to international initiatives, such as the Standards for Reporting Diagnostic accuracy studies [STARD], and the incorporation of diagnostic accuracy studies into the Cochrane Collaboration.
