Ian Kimber is currently Professor and Chair of Toxicology and Associate Dean for Business Development in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester. Previous to that he was Head of Research and Principal Fellow at Syngenta.
He has broad research interests are at the interface between toxicology and immunology with a particular focus on allergy (to chemicals and proteins). Specific interests include: (a) the factors that confer on protein and chemicals allergenic potential, (b) the function, mobilisation and migration of epidermal Langerhans cells, (c) skin biology and skin pathology including allergic contact dermatitis and psoriasis, (d) the pathogenesis of food allergy, and (e) the development of new approaches to the identification and characterization of human health risks.
Professor Kimber holds, and has held, a wide variety of positions on national and international expert and scientific advisory committees. Currently these include the following: Medicine and Health products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Committee for Safety of Devices, Programme Advisor Food Standards Agency Food Allergy and Intolerance Research Programme, and member Medical Research Council Translational Research Group. Professor Kimber is a former Chairman of the Board of the UK National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) (2008-2013), and he is a past President of the British Toxicology Society in (2012-2014).
