Dr Zhang is an electrochemist by training who has developed a solid background in both the experimental and theoretical aspects of electrochemistry during his research career. He has also obtained a broad experience in other research areas, such as biomedical engineering, materials engineering and nanotechnology. Dr Zhang has received numerous prestigious fellowships and awards, including: Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship Industry, the Australian Research Council, 2003 – 2006; Future Fellowship, the Australian Research Council, 2009 – 2013; Bond Medal, Electrochemistry Division, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, 2012; Robert Cattrall Early Career Medal, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Division, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, 2012; Monash Research Accelerator Award, Monash University, 2013-2014.
