Kälviäinen's research interests include computer vision, machine vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, and digital image processing and analysis.
Prof. Kälviäinen has supervised 28 doctoral and 165 master's theses, has written more than 220 peer-reviewed scientific articles (journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters), and 49 other research publications, and has been a responsible leader in 51 research projects (total 6,3 MEUR). Professor Kälviäinen's h-index is 33 with more than 5800 citations (Google Scholar). Prof. Kälviäinen has served 33 times as a Ph.D. thesis reviewer in 8 countries.
