Biomaterials for bone repair and regeneration
My research group explores research in the area of biomaterials science. (1) One area of research involves the chemical modification and assembly of polysaccharides. These assemblies are used in tissue engineering application as well as in drug delivery of biological factors. Of particular interest is stimulation of growth at non-union bone fractures. (2) The second area of research involves fabrication of hydroxyapatite nano-particles. We investigate growth inhibition by polymers, surface modification of the nano-particles as well as fabrication of nano-composites for biomaterial applications. (3) A third area of research involves the surface modification of polymeric and metallic biomaterials to fine tune their surface properties (topography, wettability, and chemistry) so as to obtain the desired biological response for a given application. We use gamma-irradiation induced grafting of functional monomers and gas plasma treatment and through a variety of in vitro tests we can evaluate the success of our treatment.
