Bio
Giancarlo Franzese leads a research group in Statistical Physics of Complex Matter at the U. Barcelona (UB). He received the CNR Award as Best Young Researcher Abroad (2000), the UB Incentive program for the improvement of research activity (2012), the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) selection as Emerging Investigator in Soft Matter (2012), the AQU Full Professor Accreditation (2012), the 'Felix Città di Nola' Prize (2016) and the ICREA Academia Award (2017), a prestigious 5 years prize for research. From 2011 he is in the top 20% of the 5000 UB professors for research and among the most cited scientists in Spain in Multidisciplinary Physics, Physics of Fluids, Mathematical Physics (indice-h.webcindario.com) and among the Top Italian scientists in the World (topitalianscientists.org). He is member of the NanoSafety Cluster initiative (since 2011), the Intl. Advisory Board of The European Molecular Liquids Group (since 2014), the Steering Committee and the Outreach Commission (since 2019) of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the Universitat de Barcelona (IN2UB). PhD in Physics with honors, he was associate researcher at the Un. RomaTre, the Boston Un., the Seconda Un. di Napoli and the Center for Statistical Mechanics and Complexity at the Un. La Sapienza Rome, before moving to Barcelona in 2003. Since 2002 he is visiting professor at the Center for Polymer Studies of the Boston Un. He was visiting scientist at: UFRGS Porto Alegre; Centre of BioNano Interactions-Dublin; Un. of Cambridge; Intl. Center of Quantum Materials-Beijing. He is Coordinator of the Condensed Matter line of the UB Doctorate in Physics, professor of the Master in Advanced Physics and of the Master of Computational Modeling, professor of Physics and professor of Biomedical Engineering. He has monitored 8 Master's thesis and 15 PhD theses at UB, at Boston Un. and at UFRGS. He is PI in national and international projects and led a team in one of the first FP7 projects about modelling toxicity behavior of engineered nanoparticles, funded with ~1milion€. He organized 24 international conferences and chaired 14 in subjects such as Biological Physics and Molecular Biophysics. He is member of 4 international editorial boards and is referee for 63 scientific journals, including Nature, PNAS, PRL and SciRep, and 19 international research agencies, including REA and ERC (EU), NSF (Usa), EPSRC (UK), SNSF (Switzerland) and NRF (Singapore). His investigation, on models for biological systems at the nanoscale, roots on his collaborations with experimental groups and explores directions relevant for fundamental science (e.g., NanoBioInteractions for protein self-assembly on nanoparticles) and applications (e.g., Safe-by-design nanoparticles; Theranostic). He has edited "Aspects of Physical Biology: Biological Water, Protein Solutions, Transport and Replication" (Springer 2008), "Nonequilibrium Phenomena in Confined Systems" (MDPI 2017), "Frontiers in Water Biophysics 2017" (Elsevier 2019) and published in high-impact journals, e.g. Nature, with 3 of his works listed among the Highly Cited Papers In Physics, and 2 in the Core Papers in Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition ... Supercooled Water" of the last years [1]. He has 97 Peer-reviewed publications, including book chapters, with 91 indexed articles and more than 120 invited conferences. His work has been cited in Science and many high-impact journals (~4590 citations on Google Scholar and H=38), receiving interviews on the radio and the international press and doing scientific dissemination (e.g., in the Spanish edition of Scientific American-Nature Publishing Group and in the magazine of the Real Sociedad Española de Física) in different languages.
