He received a five-year honours degree (summa cum laude) in Electronics Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in March 1995. He carried out his M.Sc. Thesis work at the Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. During 1995 he worked as Electronic Designer at Philips R&D Labs, Monza, Italy. He was the recipient of a Marie Curie Fellowship by the European Commission and in February 1999 he obtained the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University College Dublin, Ireland. He held visiting research positions at the EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne) and at the UCB (University of California, Berkeley). In March 1999, Dr. Maggio joined UCSD (University of California, San Diego) as Researcher. Then, in 2000 he started working at STMicroelectronics as Innovation Manager. Namely, he was based in San Diego, California during the period 2000-04 and affiliated with the Center for Wireless Communications at UC San Diego, where he was acting as Industry-University technical liaison. From 2004 till 2006 he was based in Geneva, Switzerland -ST’s headquarters- acting as Programme Manager and affiliated with the EPFL, as part of the Industrial Liaison Program. In June 2006, Dr. Maggio joined CREATE-NET (Center for REsearch And Telecommunication Experimentation for NETworked communities), Trento, Italy, as Head of Communication and Network Technologies. During the period 2008-10, he worked at the COST (European COoperation in Science and Technology) Office in Brussels, as Head of Cluster and responsible for the ICT Domain. In June 2010, Dr. Maggio took on the Research Director position at CREATE-NET, Trento, Italy. Then, in 2012 he joined FBK (Fondazione Bruno Kessler) in Trento, Italy, as Research/Innovation Policy Director in the context of the EIT Digital KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community). On January 2014, Dr. Maggio was appointed Co-Location Centre (CLC) Manager of EIT Digital Italy, being responsible for the Trento Co-Location Centre and the Milan Satellite and, since May 2017, he is serving as Node Director for EIT Digital in Italy.
Dr. Maggio has authored (or co-authored) over 100 publications in prestigious journals, international conferences and books. He has received the Best Paper Award at the 1999 European Conference on Circuit Theory and Design (ECCTD). Dr. Maggio is listed as a major contributor to the IEEE 802.15.4a standard and holds 2 international patents, in Europe and the United States, respectively.
Dr. Maggio is a Senior Member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and during 2014-15 has been Board Member of the IEEE Italy Section as Industry Relations Coordinator. He has served as Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Nonlinear Circuits and Systems (TC-NCAS). Moreover, he was the founder of the IEEE-CAS (Circuits and Systems) Chapter in San Diego. He served as Guest Editor for the IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems and as Associate Editor for the IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems I/II during the period 2006-08. Dr. Maggio was Board Member of the MCFA (Marie Curie Fellowship Association) and coordinator of its Industry Committee. Moreover, he was the co-founder of the MCFA in Ireland and the USA.
Dr. Maggio was part of the Technical Program Committee or the Steering Committee of several international conferences (e.g. ICUWB, CrownCom, ISCAS). Likewise, he has served as Track Chair for ISCAS 2006 (Sidney) and as Session Chair at many international events (e.g. ISCAS, ICUWB, FET Conference). He acted as General Co-Chair for the UWB4SN (UWB for Sensor Networks) 2005 Workshop, the Nano-Net 2006 Conference and, in 2009, the ICT Workshop of the COST Foresight 2030 series.
Dr. Maggio has served as Board Member of the Italian Technology Cluster on Smart Communities and as member of the Net!Works ETP (European Technology Platform) Steering Board.
