个人简介
Dr. Gerard Morton is a radiation oncologist with special expertise in using brachytherapy and image guided radiotherapy to treat prostate cancer.
He heads the brachytherapy program at the Odette Cancer Centre, and has extensive experience in both permanent seed and high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy for prostate cancer. Dr. Morton is president of the Canadian Brachytherapy Group.
He's developed a unique HDR brachytherapy treatment protocol which has been adopted in many centres across Canada, the United States and Europe.
Dr. Morton has taught brachytherapy techniques at many international workshops and as an international visiting professor. His ongoing research includes investigating ways to target the cancer more accurately with radiation, while further sparing normal tissue.
He is chair of the ACURA Awards Panel of the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncologists, which disburses funds for prostate cancer research. He has published many peer reviewed papers and book chapters on prostate cancer treatment.
The focus of Dr. Morton's research is the use of image-guided technology to guide interstitial radiotherapy of prostate cancer. He has developed novel methods of delivering high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy to treat prostate cancer through clinical research. These protocols have been widely adopted internationally and have set new standards for combining HDR brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy to treat intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer. He is chair of several clinical trials using brachytherapy including a randomized clinical trial of HDR monotherapy for patients with low and intermediate risk disease.
