Research Interests
I have always believed that one could "read" the chemistry of terrestrial (and extra terrestrial) solids in order to extract Earth (and Solar Sytem) history- this is exactly why Earth sciences intrigued me- Earth sciences provided the history and samples - What I have spent my career doing is figuring out how to extract this information from chemistry. I focused on organic solids and I think this was a great bet! What I had to do is build the analytical facilities to address the fundamental questions. I believe that we now have what we need right now!
I have created a laboratory that is very well equipped to extract "history" (Earth or Solar System) from organic matter both from this planet and beyond. We have amazing analytical tools and there are amazing synchrotron facilities that we can use- now is an amazing time to be doing science!
In particular, I now see the origin of life as a fundamental problem related to Earth's origin and am focusing on this currently. I think that my group can make some progress here.
My research interests have grown to cover a wide range of problems that focus on determining molecular structure of complex matter (both organic and inorganic) and relating this information to Earth, Life, and Solar System history.
• 1) The Chemical History of the Early Solar System as recorded in molecular structure of extraterrestrial organic matter from chondritic meteorites, Interplanetary Dust Particles, and Comets.
• 2) Transition metal catalyzed abiotic dynamic organic reaction networks and the geochemical roots of life.
• 3) Unraveling ancient biochemistry in ancient organic fossils using Soft X-ray Microscopy and imaging
• 4) Understanding the relationship between structure and composition in silicate melts - quenched as glasses.
• 5) In general: Geochemical, Cosmochemical, Materials, and geobiological applications of Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray microscopy (STXM), pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS).
