Geir Sigurdsson earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa in 2004 where he focused in particular on intercultural Chinese-Western philosophy. From 2001 to 2003 he studied Chinese and philosophy at Renmin University of China in Beijing, and in 1998-1999 he studied Chinese at Kiel University in Germany. He has an MA degree in philosophy from University College Cork in Ireland (1997) and a BA in philosophy and sociology from University of Iceland (1994).
In his research, Dr. Sigurdsson mostly focuses on education, rituals/customs, civilizational analysis, art of life and recently he has turned his attention to the philosophical significance of ageing. He makes use of both Chinese and Western insights in his research, where he looks in particular to Confucianism and Daoism, but also German idealism, critical theory, phenomenology and sociological investigations. His book, Confucian Propriety and Ritual Learning: A Philosophical Interpretation, came out by SUNY Press in 2015 and received a book award from The Society of Professors of Education in 2018. He has also finished an annotated Icelandic translation of the ancient Chinese manual Sunzi‘s Art of War (Sunzi bingfa), which was published in 2019.
