His research interests encompass the epidemiology of streptococcal diseases including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Group A and Group B streptococci. He has served on a number of vaccine advisory groups in Canada focusing on pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines. In his role as a Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Tyrrell has been involved in the teaching, supervision and training of numerous Undergraduate and Graduate students as well as Medical Residents in the field of Medical Microbiology. In addition to his roles as a Clinical Microbiologist and Professor, Dr. Tyrrell is also the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Section Chief for Medical Microbiology and Divisional Director for the Division of Diagnostic and Applied Microbiology.
