He has been several times national coordinator of research projects of prominent national interest (PRIN), coordinator of bilateral international projects in Italy-Canada, Italy-France partnership and coordinator also of R&D projects within the different European Union framework programs (Brite, Brite-Euram, Growth, etc.), all carried out in patnership with national and European chemical industries (Evonik-Degussa, Generales des Eaux, Reckitt-Benckiser, Polimeri Europa, Rhodia, EniTecnologie, VeneziaTecnologie, Mast Carbon Ltd, etc.). He is an active member of the Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, of the American Chemical Society and the Società Chimica Italiana (SCI). In the latter institution he has been member of the advisory boards of the Group of Catalysis and of the Division of Industrial Chemistry of which he has been also Vice-President and eventually President.
