Research interests
Professor Salkeld has conducted cost effectiveness and preference research in the field of screening for over two decades, covering screening breast, bowel, prostate cancer and, more recently using iPhone technology to screen for atrial fibrillation. In leading the application of preference elicitation methods to patients decision-making around screening and treatment, he notes,"it is important to capture the preferences of participants themselves when evaluating population-based screening and treatment". In the context of worldwide interest in shared decision-making and patient-centred health care, Professor Salkeld believes technology can help empower citizens/patients to make high quality decisions.
Recent work includes an Australian Research Council grant for the development and application of an online decision support tool in the area of osteoarthritis prevention and treatment. As part of his current NHMRC Program grant Professor Salkeld is working with a urological surgeon in developing personalized, evidence-based decision support for men diagnosed with early prostate cancer.
Having been a past member of the PBAC Economic Sub Committee, Professor Salkeld also maintains a research program on the economics of pharmaceuticals.
