In his research, Theißen studies the evolution of molecular genetics and plant development. In particular, he and his team are studying specialized transcription factors called MADS box proteins (or MADS domain proteins). Among them, these play a major role in the flower development of flowering plants (angiosperms, flowering plants). His working group could e.g. use MADS box genes to show that the order of Gnetales is more closely related to conifers than to conifers. flowering plant. According to the experimental results, Theißen proposed several models of plant development and evolution, which have received extensive attention. In 2001, he proposed the concept of the flower quartet, in which four MADS domain transcription factors work together to determine the identity of various flower organs.
