Bio
G. Leonard Tyler (Fellow, IEEE) received the B.E.E. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 1963 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1964 and 1967, respectively.
His early work focused on radio-wave scattering studies of the Moon with Explorer and Apollo spacecraft, followed by interdisciplinary research using high-frequency radar to determine the directional spectrum of the sea. He led the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Voyager Radio Science Team in developing and applying radio propagation and tracking methods to the study of planetary atmospheres, rings, and gravity at the giant planets and the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science team in studies of the atmosphere and gravity of Mars beginning in 1997. He joined the Stanford Electrical Engineering faculty in 1972, working with graduate students and teaching basic and advanced courses, including scattering and remote sensing. He is currently Emeritus Professor at Stanford University where he continues to work with NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) planetary missions and graduate students and on other related activities. He is the author or coauthor of numerous research papers and presentations on radio-wave propagation, scattering, occultation technique, and the application of these to planetary exploration and geophysical research.
Prof. Tyler has received four NASA medals for scientific achievement and public service. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), AAS, URSI, and the Electromagnetics Society.
