个人简介
I lead a team of amazing UX Researchers for the Google Design Platform (Material Design, Google Fonts, and Design System Management) at Google. We focus on creating design systems and tools that are usable and accessible for all and reduce the effort needed to design and develop modern mobile and web applications.
I combine deep qualitative and quantitative methods from generative to evaluative research to understand how people use technology in their lives and opportunities for new solutions (hardware, software, social, institutional, etc.). At heart, I'm a hacker and prototyper and love creating new systems and then rapidly understanding how people adopt them (or not!) in several week sprints from design through development through evaluation.
I also teach these methods in courses at Stanford, where I lead students through an entire product development, launch, and evaluation cycle in 10 weeks.
My work fits mostly in the domains of HCI/Ubiquitous Computing/Multimedia and draws on methods from Interaction/Service Design, Anthropology, Computer Science, Media Studies, Business, and Urban Studies. I participate and lead in all areas of a project from generative ethnographic-style research, through ideation, design, prototyping, field studies, implementation, and commercialization.
My work has led to several successful products at Motorola including MotoBLUR, StoryPlace.me, TuVista, and the Media Finder as well as products at Yahoo including the new Version 6.0 of the Yahoo Mail app, Messenger, and View. I publish in highly selective venues such as CHI, ACM Multimedia, Ubicomp, and Pervasive Computing. My first book, Building Mobile Experiences, was published by MIT Press in August 2012. My second book, co-authored with Sunny Consolvo and Eric Hekler, is Mobile User Research: A Practical Guide (2017).
Specialties: Human Computer Interaction, Rapid prototyping of interactive systems, Mobile Computing, Ubicomp, Field evaluation of new technology, Multimedia, Service Design, Social Computing, Multimedia
