His research focuses on the foundations and applications of agent-based techniques, which allow complex systems to make decisions while coping with uncertainty, incomplete information, and limited computational resources. His research interests include planning under uncertainty, multi-agent systems, reinforcement learning, and robotics. He has published over 40 refereed papers on these topics in prestigious journals and conferences such as AIJ, JAAMAS, IJCAI, AAAI, NIPS, AAMAS, UAI, ICAPS, ECAI.

He is a recipient of several awards including President's Special Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2011, Outstanding Dissertation Award of CAS in 2012, and Best Innovative Application Paper Award of AAMAS 2015. He won the first place of Simulation 2D League in RoboCup 2006 and the second place in RoboCup 2005. He is the Reviewer of several AI journals such as AIJ, JAIR, and JAAMAS. He served in the (Senior) Program Committee of several AI conferences such as IJCAI, AAAI, AAMAS, NIPS and ICML and as Associate Chair of RoboCup 2015. He is currently a member of Youth Innovation Promotion Association, CAS.
