Research interests: haemostasis
Dr Fabrice Cognasse’s team focuses on a niche area of scientific study that examines platelets not through their role in haemostasis but through their contribution to the body's inflammatory response. The group that he is involved in is interested in the inflammatory roles played by platelets during transfusions and especially the importance of CD40-CD40L tandems in transfusionsHe has contributed to 112 publications in peer-reviewed journals since 2001. In 2005, his team demonstrated the presence of certain immunity receptors (TLRs) on human platelets. His team suggests that platelets act in the manner of circulating sentinel cells to detect danger. Dr F. Cognasse’s team also looks at the inflammatory role of platelets during transfusion and especially the importance of CD40-CD40L tandems in transfusion and published that PCs involved in SAR (serious adverse reactions), show high sCD40L concentrations and are able to induce B-cell activation and IL-6 secretion in vitro. Finally, recent research by Dr Fabrice Cognasse’s group showed that the SAR investigated are related to a high sCD40L level in the sample, but also IL-13, MIP-1α, are potentially predictive of SAR but also of the clinical form of the SAR (FNHF or allergy-like form), which they were able to model in a mathematical tree structure. His team has also showed that platelets can play the role of immune cells, by identifying pathogenic agents and danger signals and by releasing immunomodulating substances. Dr Fabrice Cognasse and his team evidenced that platelets can induce immune cell activation and modulate their functions. In 2015, Dr Fabrice Cognasse received the 'Scott Murphy' award from the international group BEST (Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion). Since 2016, he is an active member of the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion-BEST Group and since 2017 October he manages an international project concerning inflammation and platelet transfusion.
