Francesc Torres (S'88–M'96–SM'06) was born in Ibiza, Spain, in 1962. He received the Ingeniero and Doctor Ingeniero degrees in telecommunication engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1988 and 1992, respectively.
In 1988–1989, he was a Research Assistant with the RF System Division, European Space Agency, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, where he was devoted to microwave device testing and characterization. In 1989, he joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, School of Telecommunications Engineering, UPC, as an Assistant Professor of microwave circuits and systems, where he is currently a Full Professor. Since 1995, as part of the UPC Passive Remote Sensing Group, he has been participating in a number of projects related to the SMOS mission by the European Space Agency. From 2005 to 2006, he held a sabbatical stage at the Microwave Systems Section, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, where he was involved in the geostationary synthetic thinned aperture radiometer pilot project, a passive microwave interferometric geosounder. In 2007, he cofounded the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre on Radiometric Calibration and Ocean Salinity.
