个人简介
Eugénio Oliveira studied at the Universities of Coimbra and Porto in Portugal where he got
his degree in Electrotechnical Engineering (Electronic Systems) in 1972. He was R&D
Engineer at Brown, Boveri, C. (now ABB) Electronic Laboratories in Switzerland (72-74).
In 1980 he went to the New University of Lisbon where he got his PhD with a thesis on
Knowledge Engineering and Logic Programming applications (1984).
Eugénio Oliveira was invited as a Guest Academic at IBM IEC in La Hulpe (84-85). There,
besides teaching Knowledge Based Systems, he launched small projects on
Logic Programming and Expert Systems. He was also benchmarking the new IBM Prolog
under development at Paris IBM Research Center.
In 1987 he created the Distributed Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Group at the Faculty of
Engineering of the University of Porto and was co-founder of LIACC- Artificial
Intelligence and Computer Science Group at the University of Porto. LIACC has about 60
members in 2013. LIACC includes groups working on Multi-Agent Systems, Intelligent
Robotics and Computer Science.
Eugénio Oliveira, besides directing both DAIAS (Distributed Artificial Intelligence and
Agent-based Simulation) group and LIACC Lab, is a Full Professor in Informatics at the
University of Porto since 2000. He got his PhD at the New University of Lisbon in 1984
and his “Agregação” title in 1991 at the University of Porto.
He successfully supervised 20 PhD students and more than 60 Master students.
He is Chairr of the Doctoral Program in Informatics Engineering at the University of Porto.
He was involved in many research projects, some of which funded by the European Union
as it was the case, in the 90s, of the ARCHON project a five years ESPRIT project on
agents architecture and applications. He was a co-author of the book “ARCHON: An
Architecture for Multi-Agent Systems”, edited by T. Wittig ( 214 citations in Google).
He was co-author of ORBI, a Prolog-based Expert System for decision making based on
biophysical factors (1980-83). He, together with his supervisor L. Moniz Pereira, was
awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Science and Technology in 1983.
He published more than 150 papers, mainly in the field of software agents and multi-agent
system applications as well as intelligent robotics. With his former PhD student, L.P.Reis,
he co-authored a paper (152 citations) on strategies for team coordination that lead to
several RoboCup awards at different leagues, (e.g. FCPortugal, 1
st place in the simulation
league at the world championship in 2000, Melbourne). With his group, he launched ANTE
(Agreement Negotiation in Normative and Trust-enabled Environments) a new platform to
facilitate Virtual Organizations formation and monitoring. He co-authored 4 chapters of the
book “Agreement Technologies”, ed. Sascha Ossowski, Springer 2013, in which the
technological and scientific principles behind ANTE are described. He has recently
published on text mining (e.g. “Clues for detecting irony in user-generated contents: oh...!!
it's so easy;-)”, P Carvalho, L Sarmento, MJ Silva, E de Oliveira, Proc. of the 1st
international CIKM workshop on Topic-sentiment analysis for mass opinion 2009 (53
