Global food security is under threat from the combined challenges of population growth and climate change. Flooding is particularly damaging to crops, so there is a need to make crops that are more flood tolerant. We are working on understanding the oxygen-sensing strategy used by plants to adapt to the low oxygen conditions experienced when they are flooded, so that we can engineer plants that can survive floods for longer. Students could work on projects investigating how oxygen-sensing systems evolved in plants, how plants from different habitats are adapted to survive different oxygen availabilities or they could use a chemistry-driven approach to engineer better oxygen sensors. We use an inter-disciplinary approach to correlate biochemical and biological findings so methodologies could range from enzyme kinetics to plant biology or culturing algae.
