个人简介
Professor Ele Ferrannini is Professor of Internal Medicine in the Department of
Medicine of the University of Pisa, School of Medicine, and Chief of the
Metabolism Unit at the National Research Council (CNR) Institute of Clinical
Physiology.
Professor Ferrannini obtained his MD degree and specialty certification in
Nuclear Medicine from the University of Pisa, and his specialty certification in
Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases from the University of Torino, Italy. He spent a
year as a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Clinical Physiology of the
Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and three years as a Fogarty International
Research Fellow at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
Following early studies on the kinetics of insulin and glucose in man, Professor
Ferrannini’s work focussed on quantifying insulin resistance in vivo and defining
its sites and mechanisms in healthy, obese or diabetic persons. Classical and
non-classical actions of insulin were also the subject of intense investigation in
adjacent areas of interest, such as essential hypertension and cardiovascular
disease. The operation of Randle cycle in man and the presence of insulin
resistance in essential hypertension were among his more original findings. Over
the last decade, his work has concentrated on the study of beta cell function in
vivo – with the use of mathematical modelling – and the ways in which it can go
wrong in diabetes and prediabetes and can be improved by treatment. Over the
years, Professor Ferrannini has built a strong laboratory and a relatively large
research group and has enjoyed the collaboration of many fellow scientists
around the world.
