From 1978 to 2009, Ed was head of the U-M Health System Legal Office. In 2009 he moved into the Medical School Department of ObGyn as an Associate Professor to work full-time on issues of sexual rights and reproductive justice. He has teaching appointments in the Medical School, the School of Public Health, the Law School, and LSA Women's Studies. He teaches courses on the legal and ethical aspects of medicine at the Medical School, the rules of human subjects research at the School of Public Health and reproductive justice in LSA and the Law School.. In 2011, Ed went to Ghana and helped establish a women's studies program at the law school in Kumasi.
Ed started the Adult and Pediatric Ethics Committees, advised the Medical School IRBs, helped create the University-wide embryonic stem cell research oversight board (www.drda.umich.edu/policies/um/ESC), and chairs the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Community Advisory Board. Ed's work focuses on embryonic stem cell research, newborn screening, and the intersection of law and medicine with special attention to reproductive justice issues and issues of informed choice. He is a member of a national commission focusing on the research use of newborn screening dried blood spots and is the president of the State of Michigan BioTrust which manages the research use of dried blood spots from the State of Michigan newborn screening program. Ed received a Michigan Meetings grant from Rackham for a 3 day conference on reproductive justice May 29-June 1, 2013 in Ann Arbor at the Rackham Building.That lead to a three year Ford Foundation grant (2014-2017) to study reproductive justice groups in Michigan and work with them on capacity building.
In 2016 Ed was appointed as one of eight faculty responsible for ethics consults at UMHS.
