I am the Surgeon-in-Chief, Detroit Medical Center and the Penberthy Professor and Chairman Department of Surgery Wayne State University School of Medicine Detroit, Michigan. As a young man I lived in India and went to high school in Mussoorie. I finished medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and completed a residency in general surgery at Wayne State University in 1979. I stayed on to be faculty and was promoted to Chairman in 2005. I have been a leader in defining the changing face of surgery and speaks frequently on the future of surgery. I authored more than 100 articles and book chapters, and I hold intellectual property and patent applications in the areas of minimally invasive surgery, image guided surgery and surgical technology. I am an active clinical surgeon and has been the recipient of numerous awards for surgical excellence. My main clinical interests are surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. I have traveled extensively as a visiting professor in many countries and is President of the Board of Directors for the Detroit International Research and Education Foundation (DIREF). My international interests lie in educating and training young surgeons. I have a long-standing interest in surgical education and oversees the training program in Surgery for 1200 medical students and 64 Surgical Residents at Wayne State University. I have been serving as mentor to Dr. Ramesh Babu Batchu regarding the immunotherapy work described in this proposal to inhibit growth of ovarian and pancreatic cancers. The proposed studies provide the means for enhancing the efficacy, to overcome cancer influenced immunosuppression and improving outcomes in CAR T-cell therapy for solid tumors. I believe that my previous experience in performing basic and translational research in cancer therapy, when taken together with recent collaborative work in pancreatic and ovarian cancer, will facilitate completion of the proposed studies.
