Dr. Dickson’s career is devoted to neuropathology of neurodegeneration, particularly dementia and Parkinsonism. He has authored or co-authored over 650 peer-reviewed papers and 50 book chapters. He is neuropathologist for Mayo's Alzheimer Disease Research Center, the State of Florida Alzheimer Disease Initiative, and the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He has evaluated over 6000 brains of neurodegenerative disorders. His professional career began with Robert D. Terry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as neuropathologist for the Einstein Aging Study. His studies led to recognition that some clinically normal individuals have amyloid deposition comparable to Alzheimer’s disease, a process he termed “pathological aging.” He was one of the first to realize that Lewy body dementia (LBD) was a common cause of dementia in the elderly. He and Peter Davies described cholinergic deficiencies in LBD, and he discovered novel hippocampal neuritic pathology in LBD. Early biochemical studies on tau with Shu-Hui Yen led to research on tauopathies, including Pick’s disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and corticobasal degeneration. Mutations in MAPT confirmed the importance of tau and seeded research on transgenic mice carrying mutant tau. He and his collaborators at Mayo Clinic, including Jada Lewis and Mike Hutton, demonstrated that these mice develop neurofibrillary degeneration and neuronal loss.
