Research interests
I am broadly interested in how functional complexity emerges across different scales of biological organization, from molecules and cells to organisms and populations, on a dynamic planet. Our group approaches this problem through the lens of the development and evolution of phenotypically plastic traits in insects in order to illuminate general mechanisms that promote or constrain the generation of biodiversity. Our current focus is on describing the development of migration in the monarch butterfly and on understanding how this developmental-genetic 'design' influences evolution of the migration strategy. We integrate development, genomics, behavior, and physiology in both laboratory and natural settings to address these problems.
