He started his own research group after being awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, based around the use of shaped light fields for the manipulation of microscopic particles, especially aerosols. In 2007 he moved to the University of Dundee to take up a Lectureship, where he continued to work on optical physics, branching out into a range of projects looking at biophotonics and biomedical imaging: exploring super resolution microscopy, cell mechanics, cell division, cellular adhesion, Raman spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography and elastography, multiphoton imaging and applications in prostate and bladder cancer diagnosis. He also developed microfluidic tools for examining cell mechanics with a view to studying the cell mechanics of cancer cells
