RESEARCH INTERESTS
Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) die prematurely, largely as a result of cardiovascular diseases. Observational studies indicate that traditional cardiovascular risk factors do not predict outcomes in such patients. Our work is focussed on characterisation of the cardiovascular changes associated with CKD, exploration of the pathophysiology and identification of novel targets for future therapies. To date we have developed risk equations that accurately predict kidney and patient outcomes in CKD and through a major collaborative effort, have initiated a randomised controlled trial involving over 9000 patients aimed at assessing the benefits of lipid-lowering therapy. Ongoing laboratory based studies have to date identified inflammation, hyperphosphataemia and elevated levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine as potential therapeutic targets.
