Daniel Kray

Daniel Kray (M'08) received the Diploma degree in physics from the University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany, in 2004. In 2000, he joined the High-Efficiency Solar Cell Group, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE), Freiburg, to develop ultrathin silicon wafer solar cells as well as emitter-wrap-through solar cells. After his Ph.D., in 2005, he was responsible for the ramp-up of the market area “Wafertechnology,” which included wire sawing, mechanical wafer characterization, and wet-chemical wafer processes. Since 2001, he has been working on the liquid-jet-guided laser [laser-chemical processing (LCP)], which is a microstructuring method that he invented together with G. P. Willeke. This technology is his main current research interest in the new research group (“Micropatterning and laser-chemical technologies”) that he led in 2007 at Fraunhofer ISE. In 2009, he is with Innovalight, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA. He is the holder of several patents on LCP. His other research interests are high-efficiency multicrystalline emitter-wrap-through solar cells and laser applications in PV. Dr. Kray was in the team of Stefan Glunz (together with A. Mette and O. Schultz-Wittmann) that received the Eni Award for Science and Technology 2008.
