Prof. Daniel De Backer was born on December 28, 1961 in Brussels. He obtained his MD diploma with magna cum laude in June 1986 from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He became fully specialized in internal medicine in 1991 and in intensive care medicine in 1992 (both at Université Libre de Bruxelles). In 1996, Dr. De Backer obtained the title of "Agrégé de l'Enseignement Supérieur" (PhD) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Prof. De Backer combines clinical, research, and teaching activities. He is Professor of Intensive Care at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and is Head of Intensive Care Departments of CHIREC hospitals (Brussels and Braine l’Alleud-Waterloo). His main fields of investigations are severe sepsis, organ dys and its treatment (including ECMO), acute circulatory failure (circulatory shock) and its treatment (in particular vasoactive agents), oxygen transport, hemodynamic monitoring (including echocardiography), hepato-splanchnic circulation and microcirculatory disorders. Prof. De Backer is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine (medical students-2nd Master, postgraduate doctors specialty of Intensive Care, and nurses) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and participates in postgraduate teaching in various universities in France. Prof. De Backer is course director of several courses on echocardiography in Brussels, Sao Paulo and at the American Thoracic Society annual meeting. Prof. De Backer has signed more than 200 original articles (most in the English language), 30 editorials, more than 30 book chapters and review articles, and 250 original abstracts. He presented more than 700 invited lectures and often served as moderator at various international meetings. Prof. De Backer is currently associate editor of "Anesthesiology and Critical Care", “Critical Care”, and “International Journal of Intensive Care”, and member of the advisory board of several other journals. He is former associate editor of "Intensive Care Medicine". He serves regularly as reviewer for more than 30 journals including "Intensive Care Medicine", "Critical Care Medicine", "American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine", “Critical Care”, "Shock", "Anesthesia Analgesia", and "Anesthesiology". Prof. De Backer is President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and past Vice- President of the Société de Réanimation de Langue Française. He is past Chairman of the Research Committee of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and former head of “ESICM Trial Group”. Prof. De Backer received the Young Researcher Award of the Société de Réanimation de Langue Française in 1996, the Annual Prize of the Belgian Society of Intensive Care in 1997, Foundation André Loicq award in 1998, “article of the year 2010 award” of the Belgian Association of Internal Medicine. He also had several communications awarded at international congresses.
