Bio
Costel R. Rotundu is primarily interested in synthesis and low temperature/high field/high pressure physical property measurements of strongly correlated electron systems, with a focus on cuprate and iron-based high temperature superconductors, topological insulators, low dimensional quantum magnets, and heavy fermions. For materials synthesis (mostly in crystal form) he uses the methods of flux growth, chemical vapor transport, Bridgman, traveling floating zone, and high pressure high temperature.
Dr. Rotundu completed his Ph.D. in Physics at University of Florida, with a thesis on heavy fermion superconductors. After graduation he was Research Associate at University of Maryland and Visiting Investigator at Geophysical Laboratory of Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC conducting high pressure transport and X-ray measurements on HTSc cuprates. While at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory his main focus was HTSc iron-arsenides, synthesis of materials and study of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism through transport and X-ray and neutron scattering measurements. After, at UCLA, he searched for new superconducting materials via high throughput syntheses. At Stanford Institute for Materials & Energy Sciences (SIMES), a joint institute of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University, and Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials GLAM his research focus was the study of new quantum phases in cuprate and iron-based HTSC via low temperature/high field/high pressure magnetic, electrical transport, and X-ray measurements. He explored via different synthetic routes new topological insulators.
