Research Interests:
Photosynthesis and membrane dynamics in bacteria
I am interested in understanding how prokaryotic cells function as physical systems. My background is in photosynthesis research, and we make extensive use of cyanobacteria as model organisms.
Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes that grow photosynthetically in much the same way as green plants. The light reactions of photosynthesis take place in and around the thylakoid membranes, an extensive intracellular membrane system. We are particularly interested in the dynamics of thylakoid membranes - how mobile are membrane proteins, and how is protein mobility involved in biogenesis, regulation, turnover and repair?
Techniques used include confocal microscopy, Fluorescence Recovery after Photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with molecular biology and biochemistry. We are applying similar techniques to understand the function of the plasma membrane of Escherichia coli.
