He has specialist accreditation in Clinical Microbiology and has completed the DTMH at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and a PhD from the UK Open University.
Research interests concern the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of severe bacterial infections in south and southeast Asia with a focus on typhoid fever. He is co-investigator in the ACT-South Asia randomised controlled trial of antibiotic therapy in suspected uncomplicated typhoid fever funded by Joint Global Health Trials Scheme (Department of Health and Social Care, the Department for International Development, the Global Challenges Research Fund, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust).
