My lab at Butler studies the interplay between RNA virus environmental stability and infectivity. Preliminary study of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a leading pathogen of infants, identified mutations in the RSV fusion (F) protein that govern virus thermal stability and contribute to stabilizing the prefusion conformation, which is required for infectivity. Our ongoing studies with RSV and other RNA viruses will provide new insights into mechanisms of virus stabilization and infectivity.
