Among his outstanding contributions and achievements in electron microscopy and materials research, the most recent one, also highly cited as seminal, is his innovative work on the development of in situ TEM for electrochemical studies. This work led to a 2016 Materials Research Society (MRS) Innovation in Materials Characterization Award (shared with Frances Ross from IBM and Niels de Jonge from Leibniz Institute for New Materials of Germany) and a 2012 Microscopy Today Innovation Award. This work opened a new field of research clustered on atomic-level direct observation of electrochemical processes under dynamic operating conditions. His continued research of in situ aberration-corrected S/TEM, leading to three generations of in situ TEM probes for the research community, broadly dubbed as open and closed cell, was recognized in the 2015 Journal of Materials Research Paper of the Year Award.
