Professor Ironside has extensive experience in optoelectronics particularly semiconductor integrated optoelectronics and a main theme has been integrated laser diode chips.
His main areas of interest include:-
Quantum Cascade lasers
Photonic integration for atomic clocks, magnetometers and frequency standards
Ultrashort pulse laser diodes
Resonant Tunnelling Diode OptoElectronic Integrated Circuits
Research highlights include:-
Fastest all optical semiconductor switch
Invention multiple colliding pulse passively modelocked laser diode
Invention of the two photon semiconductor laser
First Quantum Cascade laser made in Europe and first PhD on quantum cascade lasers was carried out under my supervision
Pioneer of resonant tunnelling diode optoelectronic integrated circuits
Grating microtraps traps for atomic vapour.
