More than 20 years of research experience, both academic and industry based, in diverse research fields including, clinical pharmacology, cancer research, gene therapy, cell therapy and clinical islet transplantation. Played an integral role in establishing the first Nationally Funded Centre (NFC) program in South Australia for islet transplantation to treat type 1 diabetes. Key member of the team that performed the first pediatric islet transplant in Australia for treatment of chronic pancreatitis. Cloned several recombinant herpes simplex virus (rHSV) that encoded recombinant adeno associated viral (rAAV) packaging and therapeutic gene cassettes. The successful cloning of these rHSV enabled the first pre-clinical gene-therapy trial using rHSV-manufactured rAAV to be undertaken. In addition to the research experience I have managed a large research laboratory consisting of 5 clinician scientists, 5-10 research staff and 3-5 research students. This has required significant human resource management and financial responsibility and oversight of multiple research cost centres with annual budgets of $500,000.
