个人简介
Carla Costa has a BSc degree in Genetics and Microbiology (Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, 1998) and holds a PhD in Human Biology (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, FMUP, 2005). Her doctoral studies, in neoangiogenesis and oncobiology, were performed at Cornell Medical College (New York City) in collaboration with the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), in Portugal. Her thesis entitled “Essential role for angiogenic factors and bone marrow-derived endothelial/hematopoietic precursor cells in the growth of solid tumors” was awarded the best PhD thesis of 2005 (Institute of Clinical Genetics, IGM). In 2005, Carla initiated her Post-Doctoral studies at FMUP and was also appointed Invited Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology (20%). Her academic duties included lectures, practical classes and optional research projects for medical undergraduate students. Carla has also collaborated with ALERT Life Sciences Computing, in the development of ALERT Student, an e-learning platform for medical students (2009-2011). Carla has also been deeply involved in post-graduation studies, collaborating as invited lecturer in multiple Masters and PhD programs. These experiences reconciled her interest in academic activities with her enthusiasm for research. Post-Doc research interests were focused on evaluating vascular alterations (angiogenic and vasculogenic mechanisms) involved in erectile dysfunction associated to aging and diabetes. In 2007, Carla received her first grant as Principal Investigator by FCT, starting her independent line of research. In the same year, she was appointed Assistant Researcher by the Program “Compromisso com a Ciência 2007”, at FMUP. As “Ciência 2007”, she established multiple collaborations with top experts in Urology/Andrology and became a member of the European Network Group “CarPDIEn”, applicant to EU Framework Program calls in 2014. She has also collaborations with multiple national research groups working in vascular research. Carla is well recognized by her work in the field, as reflected by the invitation to speak in international meetings (10) and as chairperson in national (3) and international (8) conferences. In addition, her work has been awarded by several Institutions, including the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM; 2007 and 2011), the Portuguese Society of Andrology (SPA; 2006, 2012 and 2014), the Portuguese Association of Urology (2008 and 2011), the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2011) and Marie Currie Fellowships (2005 and 2006). She has been an active participant in societies devoted to Sexual Medicine. In 2007 she was a founding member of iSEX, Association for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in Portugal. In 2009 she was elected member of the Executive Committee of ESSM. Two years later, she became affiliated to the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee for Sexual Medicine (MJCSM) and to MJCSM Exam Committee, responsible for the first European certification in Sexual Medicine (as Fellow of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine; FECSM). In 2012 she joined the Directive Board of SPA. Carla is referee for international journals (9), member of scientific journals editorial boards (2), abstract reviewer for the European Association of Urology (EAU) and grant reviser for ESSM. Since 2011 she is Editor of the literature review section “Top of JSM - Basic Research”, on ESSM website. During her career, she co-edited one scientific book, published 7 book chapters, 26 papers in international peer review journals (cumulative impact factor 150; 2941 citations; h-Index 10; as of 31-05-14). Of these, 3 were published in major multidisciplinary scientific journals, namely Nature Medicine and Nature. Five articles were published in the highest impact factor journal in Sexual Medicine. From the 25 articles, 12 were published as first author and 5 of the most recent ones were published as senior corresponding author. Carla supervised medical doctors in lab rotations (3), medical students (2), a foreign research fellow, and currently supervises one PhD student and co-supervises another. She completed the supervision of 3 undergraduate theses and is the external member of several thesis committees (9).
