Byung Ihn Choi is currently Professor at the Department of Radiology of Seoul National University, College of Medicine, in Korea, and is an internationally recognised abdominal radiologist, particularly in the field of hepatobiliary imaging. Born in Korea in 1950, Doctor Choi went on to obtain his medical degree from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1974, before embarking on a rotating internship and residency at the same institution, and receiving his doctorate in 1983. During this period he also spent three years as Radiologist-in-Chief, Major, at the Capital Armed Forces Hospital of the Korean Army. From 1985 onwards, he took positions as visiting radiologist or visiting professor at a variety of institutions across the USA and in Tokyo, Japan, before being appointed to a professorship at the Seoul National University in 1994. He then acted as a radiological consultant to the Korean Ministry of National Defence between 1997 and 2006 and was Director of the Office of Education and Research at his institution from 1998 and 2002. Throughout his career he has delivered a total of 525 invited lectures and published more than 600 scientific papers, while also serving on the editorial boards of numerous national and international journals, including European Radiology, Abdominal Imaging, and Imaging in Medicine. Doctor Choi is currently president of the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology (AOSR), and the Korean Association for the Study of the Liver (KASL), president-elect of the Asian Society of Abdominal Radiology (ASAR), and immediate past president of the Asian Federation of Societies of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (AFSUMB). His enormous contribution to international radiology has led to honorary membership of many regional and international radiological societies.
