Research Abstract
Professor Buchmeier's laboratory is interested in the pathogenesis and control of viral infections. Viral diseases are among the most common environmental factors which influence human health and manifest in a variety of acute and chronic scenarios. These may include acute viral infections of various organ systems including the CNS and respiratory systems, and may result in a range of effects. My group is interested primarily in two classes of RNA Viruses that affect the CNS. These are the murine and human coronaviruses and the Arenaviruses. We study the structure and function of these viruses, and the contributions of the viral proteins and glycoproteins to the viral life cycle and disease, We are also engaged in antiviral drug design in, and the mechanisms by which viruses interact with the host during acute and persistent infection. The consequences of these virus-host interactions contributes to variety of autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases, and we try to determine the host and viral events which result in disease.
