Research
My research and teaching interests focus mainly on understanding how the human body is used as a communication device. At the core of this embodied approach are the basic physical mechanisms of movement control and sensation, and their interactions with speech production, perception, phonology and phonetics in normal, disordered, and children’s speech, and across languages, including signed languages. More broadly, I am interested in how people interact with each other and their environment, and how this interaction can inform models of linguistic communication. To these ends, some of my major research goals have involved developing techniques for applying ultrasound imaging technology to speech research, protocols for studying haptic (tactile) perception of speech, methods for observing low-level planning in speech motor behaviour, and biomechanical simulation (see www.artisynth.org).
